Dagerman published many essays, often on topics related to politics and philosophy (Essäer och andra texter, Norstedts, 1981). His most famous essay is the autobiographical Our Need for Consolation Is Insatiable, which has been published in many languages.
A second essay A Child's Memoirs has been published in English as part of the short story collection The Games of Night.
"Creative imagination awakens early. As children we are all 'makers' /.../ I took to 'making things up' early. Reality—though it is far too grand a word—became warmer, more amusing, more fun to look at if one rearranged it a little."
